Post from the pit

People ask me “What have you been doing since you finished the first leg of your epic voyage?” I am sure they are expecting an answer about something equally stimulating, deep, and long-lasting. And they are right!
I spend my days (when I’m not working for the forest service) digging a hole. Each morning I wake to the same prospects that convicted felons of 100 years ago faced: days spent standing in a hole, shoveling out dirt, rocks, sand and gravel. Of course, wearing prison stripes doesn’t help my outlook at all. Why am I doing this? Because I think having a place to go to the bathroom is a basic human right. I shouldn’t have to spend thousands of dollars to get an outhouse pumped out. So I am digging a new latrine. I don’t care if it takes me the rest of the summer.
