SPRINGTIME AT THE CABIN

A week ago today the ice finally went out of Elbow Lake. Well, out of part of Elbow Lake, the part that mattered. I had to dodge a few icebergs to get to my cabin, but when I arrived everything was in good order. The solar panels were still functioning, there were no trees down on the roof, the dock hadn’t floated away, no critters had moved in. In short order I had the water system going and the propane hooked up to the fridge and stove. After getting my new boat motor on my old boat, I was ready for summer. The weather has actually been summerlike, so it has been a very pleasant week getting settled. I was one of the fortunate few who didn’t lose their jobs working for the government, so I am spending four days a week at the Forest Service office in Cook.

I am sad to report that Monkey is no longer among the living. This is the first stretch of time I have ever spent at the cabin without him. His spirit follows me around every day, just as he did. I miss him.

I will be finishing my trip to Hudson Bay this August.

  1. Sounds like you’re up and running. Monkey lived his best life with you and loved being in his happy place too. Enjoy the beautiful weather!

  2. Sorry to hear of Monkey’s demise. Will you be getting a new canine companion? Let me know of your August plans once they are organized. I hope we can meet up in Winnipeg again. In the meantime, enjoy your coming summer in your cabin. I’m going for a Women’s Retreat at Luther Village near Kenora, Ontario in June. Looking forward to that. Hope you had a Happy Mother’s Day. Love from me.
