As you may know, our canoe trip on the Hayes River last summer ended in disaster. Part of the disappointment of that accident was that I had put so much time and effort into solving the logistical problems associated with the trip. When you are dealing with a town that has no roads, restaurants, or hotels, and a river that has nothing but wilderness, and a destination in the middle of nowhere, it was a big job to put the pieces together. We were only two weeks short of Hudson Bay when we had to return to Oxford House, Manitoba.
I am very happy to report that I have found a way to finish the trip! For those two remaining weeks, which will occur in August, 2025, I will be with all new travel companions. After one Deb bowed out of the trip, I went looking for another Deb. I found her, a native of California, and she agreed to join our group. Then another Deb bowed out, and Deb III and I agreed that we will travel with a professional river guide this year. He will provide all the gear, the canoes, the food, but most wonderfully, he will make all the arrangements. He will get us to Oxford House and he will get us back from Hudson Bay to Thompson, which is where the road to civilization begins. I am feeling very relieved and happy that I can finish the trip. It will be very different not being in charge of everything, but it is perhaps fitting. Things change, and we go with the flow.

You’re amazing and an inspiration! You’ve found a way to reach your goal. Can’t wait to get your reports enroute!

You wouldn’t believe how Canada looks from 35k feet up. The northeast part. It’s mind boggling. All the lakes.
